This course is an introduction into the field of media
and telecommunications. From Guglielmo Marconi and
the first wireless telegraph to Steve Job’s and the Apple iPhone – this course will examine some of the people, companies and strategies that have transformed the business of communication. We begin, by looking at the history and development of select media and information technologies, including radio and television broadcasting, cable television, telephone communication and the Internet. Later, we examine a select number of issues pertaining to the field of media and telecommunications, including management (industry structure) communication technology (electromagnetic spectrum, digital media),
law and policy (the FCC and privacy), and the social effects of media and communication.
