Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is concerned with developing computer systems that are able to perform tasks that imitate human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, analytical problem study, and decision making. The study of AI owes its beginnings to British mathematician Alan Turing, the intellectual father of the modern computer, who believed that

one day machines would be powerful enough that they could think like humans. AI is closely tied to the study of decision theory in mathematics and expert systems in computer science. Decision theory is concerned with finding the best tools, methodologies  and software to help people and organizations solve problems  and make better decisions. The goal of AI is to develop new approaches to reasoning and problem solving.

The field of artificial intelligence breaks down into five areas.     They include:

         1) Intelligent network design

         2) Expert systems

         3) Natural language processing

         4) Robotics

         5) Machine vision

What all AI systems share in common is the ability to reason, problem solve, and take corrective action based on preprogramed assumptions and information inputs.
There are two distinguishing features that characterize all AI systems. First, the AI system must have the ability to scan  its external surroundings.  Second, the AI system must have the ability to evaluate a situation and initiate an appropriate decision/response. The decision must be rationale.
We call this adaptation.
